He asked me to write it for him, so here it goes: =20 2011-2012 Annual picnic/membership drive At the farm of Kars and Grace Tamminga in Waxahachie September 11, 2011 =20 Last Sunday we once again gathered at the farm of Kars and Grace = Tamminga for our annual picnic/membership drive. =20 The weather was splendid. The sun shone in the blue sky and not a cloud = was seen. Although warm, it was still below 100 degrees. For the = temperatures we have had this summer, that was most reasonable. =20 Pictures of the picnic will soon appear on our website. =20 73 people were present, 53 adults and 20 children. Although the pool = had cooled because of the cold nights we have had recently, several of = the children played in the pool with great enthusiasm. =20 Because it was 9/11, we briefly remembered the victims of 9/11 and their = loved ones who stayed behind. We all share in this tragedy and are = trying to build a better tomorrow. =20 This year too, we were treated to a hayride and a tour of the farm. The = farm is enormous! The drought has left the fields parched and the water = ponds dry. Kars and Grace are buying lots of hay for the cattle. =20 When we reached the first clump of trees, close to a dried-up waterhole, = a lot of cows that were peacefully chewing their cud in the shade, got = up and took a closer look at us. That was fun; especially since = (speaking for myself) we were safely seated on the hay wagon. =20 Kars and his son told us lots of interesting facts about the = maintenance, feeding and milking of the cows. He told us how the stalls = are cleaned, how he keeps the cows healthy and cool, and how often the = cows are milked. We saw where the milk is stored and were shown around = in the barns where the cows are milked. We saw the enormous bins where = the various feed grains etc. are stored. It was fun to learn about this = enormous operation. =20 Back on the patio we found Will Dupont behind the barbeque. Before the = hayride we were treated to a lot of lovely hors d'oevres, but we were = again hungry afterwards. Irma Schendstok had organized the barbeque and = prepared a lot of it herself. Grace's kitchen was a busy beehive and = Grace a hard worker in it. Other women helped. Several of the women = had brought appetizers. I don't know exactly who had brought what, but = I know that Mimi Dupont had brought bite size saucijzebroodjes. Kay = Wright brought fruit in watermelon bowls. Very artistic. There were = also the famous ham dip, the 7-layer dip, a multitude of different chips = and stuffed eggs. =20 But the main dish really stood out this year. Irma had prepared = brisket. Oh, it was so good! She had also made a lot of sate stokjes = that Will barbequed. There was peanut sauce and you never tasted = anything so good. The sate was pork, as I understand real sate is. = There were the hotdogs, potato salad, Caesar salad and buns, etc., etc.. = I hope that nobody was on a diet. =20 For desert we had chocolate and vanilla ice cream. A huge round = fruitcake and a mocha cake from Henk's European deli and the best = homemade boterkoek, produced by Tiny van Houten. =20 Needless to say, it was fun to meet each other again, the company was = delightful. It was a wonderful Sunday. =20 Your board is planning the next event for November 5th. This will be a = delicious fall dinner. We are planning on following it by taking = adventage of the various talents of our members. We will have a guitar, = a piano, perhaps an accordion, and CD's for teaching us a fun dance. = Perhaps there will be cards. We may have people who can recite a poem, = tell a funny story, etc.. =20 The dinner will be held in the clubhouse of Southridge Lakes in = Southlake. It is a very cozy place, with a fireplace and comfortable = seating. We have met there twice before. Water and soft drinks will be = provided by the club. Last=20 Sunday we once again gathered at the farm of Kars and Grace Tamminga for = our=20 annual picnic/membership drive.
